Travel
Stony Brook has basic directions for travelling to the main campus.
Below are more detailed instructions for commonly used options.
If you are using the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to get to Stony Brook and purchasing tickets at a vending machine, you will be asked if you will be traveling during peak time. Peak time tickets are a few dollars more expensive. Weekend trips are always off-peak. For workdays, peak pricing for travel to Stony goes from approximately 4pm to 8pm. Peak pricing for travel from Stony Brook is from 4am to 8am. Please check the LIRR timetables (Port Jefferson branch) for the most up-to-date information on (off-)peak times.
From John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK)
Take the AirTrain to the Jamaica stop, and then take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Stony Brook (Port Jefferson branch). The best way to pay for both the AirTrain and LIRR fares is to buy a combined ticket at the LIRR vending machines before leaving the Jamaica AirTrain stop.
Alternatively, you may use a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft from JFK to the Hilton Garden Inn at Stony Brook. Depending on the provider, current demand, and type of vehicle, prices range from $100 to $180.
From LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
From LaGuardia Airport you can take a taxi or rideshare for approximately $20 to the closest Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train station: the Woodside train station. From Woodside, you should then take the LIRR to Stony Brook by transferring at the Jamaica train station (using the Port Jefferson branch).
From MacArthur Airport (ISP)
MacArthur Airport is located in Islip, about 15 miles away from Stony Brook. It is most easily accessible by car. Rental counters are available at the airport, and rideshares are reasonably priced.
From Penn Station or Grand Central Terminal
Take the LIRR to Stony Brook (Port Jefferson branch).
